Set Medic

What does Set Medic mean?

Set Medic is a certified medical professional — typically an EMT, paramedic, or nurse — required to be present on film and television sets to provide immediate medical care in the event of an injury or medical emergency. Most union productions and many non-union productions require a set medic on every shooting day. The set medic maintains a medical kit, conducts pre-shoot safety assessments, monitors cast and crew for signs of heat exhaustion, dehydration, or other occupational health concerns, and serves as the first responder if an incident occurs. For productions involving child performers, the presence of a set medic is both a legal requirement and a fundamental safety practice.

Example:During the outdoor shoot in summer heat, the set medic circulated through the crew and cast periodically, making sure everyone was hydrated and watching for early signs of heat-related illness — paying particular attention to the child performers whose work hour limits also meant managing their physical stamina carefully.
Example: When a crew member twisted her ankle during a quick equipment move, the set medic was on scene within seconds — assessing the injury, providing initial treatment, and determining whether the crew member needed transport to a medical facility or could continue working with support.

Did you know?
The requirement for a set medic on union productions is a relatively recent development in the industry’s history. It emerged following a series of high-profile on-set accidents and fatalities that drew attention to the physical risks of production work, particularly during action sequences and in extreme environmental conditions. The death of actor Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow in 1993 was a watershed moment that significantly accelerated safety reform across the industry.
