What does Greensman mean?
Greensman is a specialized member of the art department on a film or television production responsible for selecting, placing, and maintaining all plant and natural vegetation used on set — including live plants, trees, flowers, grass, and foliage of any kind. The greensman works under the set decorator and property master to source and install plant material that matches the script’s requirements and the production designer’s vision, and to maintain that material in good condition throughout the filming period. On larger productions, a team of greens department workers may be supervised by a key greensman or greens coordinator.
Example:The greensman spent two days before filming began transforming the studio stage into a convincing backyard garden, sourcing mature plants, laying sod, and arranging potted trees to match the production designer’s detailed illustration of the set.
Example: Between shooting days, the greensman watered and repositioned the plants on set to ensure they maintained their freshness and matched the continuity established in the earlier shots — wilted plants would create noticeable inconsistencies in the edit.

The greensman’s job becomes particularly challenging on long productions or in studio environments where plants receive no natural light or rainfall. Some productions maintain a dedicated nursery on the studio lot to keep replacement plants ready in case set vegetation deteriorates between shooting days. Period films set in specific seasons add another layer of complexity — sourcing plants that bloom in the wrong season can require considerable ingenuity.
