What does Electrical Department mean?
Electrical Department is the production crew department responsible for all electrical power distribution and lighting on a film or television production. Led by the gaffer (chief lighting technician), the electrical department manages the placement, operation, and control of all lighting instruments, the running of electrical cables and power distribution, and the operation of generators when shooting on location. The department works closely with the director of photography to execute the lighting design for each scene. Key roles include the gaffer, best boy electric, and the electricians (sometimes called lamp operators or juicers).
Example:The electrical department arrived at the location two hours before the camera crew to pre-rig the lighting grid — running cables, hanging instruments, and configuring the power distribution so everything was ready the moment the director of photography walked in.
Example: When the generator powering the electrical department’s equipment failed mid-scene, the best boy electric coordinated a rapid switch to a backup power source while the gaffer kept the director informed of the expected delay — minimizing disruption to the shooting day.
Did you know?
Electricians on film and television productions are sometimes called ‘juicers’ — a slang term that dates back to the earliest days of cinema when electrical power was a relatively new and somewhat mysterious technology. The term reflects the informal, close-knit culture of the production crew, where most departments have developed their own internal vocabulary and traditions over more than a century of filmmaking.
