Name Value

What does Name Value mean?

Name Value refers to the commercial worth of an actor’s, director’s, or other creative professional’s name and reputation in the marketplace — the degree to which their attachment to a project increases its ability to attract financing, distribution, and audiences. High name value indicates that a performer’s involvement is itself a marketable asset — their name on a poster or in a trailer drives ticket sales and platform subscriptions in quantifiable ways.

Example:The producer explained that attaching an actor with strong name value to the family film was a prerequisite for securing the international distribution deals that would make the production financially viable — certain foreign markets would only commit to distribution if the cast included a recognizable name.
Example: The child actor’s growing name value — demonstrated by social media following, industry recognition, and commercial booking success — was becoming a meaningful factor in her agent’s negotiations, allowing her to command higher rates than her experience level alone would justify.

Did you know?
Name value is particularly important in the foreign presale market, where distributors in individual countries pay advances against distribution rights before a film is produced. They are buying based on the commercial appeal of the attached cast in their specific market rather than any finished product. This creates a system in which certain performers are more valuable for financing purposes than their domestic reputation would suggest, because their name value in specific international markets is exceptionally high.
