Independent Film and Television Alliance (IFTA)

What does Independent Film and Television Alliance (IFTA) mean?

Independent Film and Television Alliance (IFTA) is an international trade association representing independent film and television companies that finance, produce, and distribute content outside of the major Hollywood studios. The IFTA organizes the American Film Market (AFM), one of the world’s largest film industry events, where independent producers and distributors buy and sell the rights to films. For independent productions — including many that cast child actors — IFTA member companies are an important alternative to studio financing and distribution.

Example:The independent production company secured international distribution for its family film by attending the American Film Market organized by IFTA, where they negotiated deals with distributors from over 30 countries.
Example: When the parent researched the production company behind her child’s audition, she discovered they were an IFTA member — indicating they were an established independent production entity with international distribution experience.

The American Film Market, organized by IFTA, takes place annually in Santa Monica, California, and draws over 7,000 industry professionals from more than 70 countries. Unlike a film festival, the AFM is purely a business market — it exists solely for buying and selling film and television rights.
