What does Media Conglomerate mean?

Media Conglomerate is a large corporation that owns and operates multiple media businesses across different platforms and industries — typically including film studios, television networks, streaming services, publishing houses, music labels, theme parks, and other entertainment and media properties. Media conglomerates have come to dominate the entertainment industry through decades of mergers and acquisitions, concentrating ownership of the most significant content creation and distribution channels in a small number of companies. Understanding the conglomerate structure helps performers and parents navigate the relationships between the studios, networks, and streaming platforms that employ them.

Example:The agent explained to the family that the streaming platform, the television network, and the film studio that had all expressed interest in their child were all divisions of the same media conglomerate — a concentration of ownership that affected how deals were structured and how the child’s work might be distributed across different platforms.
Example: The entertainment attorney advised the client to review the subsidiary relationships carefully in the contract — the production company was a division of a media conglomerate, and the rights granted in the agreement would flow up to the parent corporation rather than remaining with the immediate production entity.

The six major media conglomerates — sometimes called the ‘Big Six’ — that dominated Hollywood through the 2010s have been reshaped by streaming-era mergers and acquisitions. Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, AT&T’s purchase and subsequent spin-off of WarnerMedia, and Discovery’s merger with that entity to form Warner Bros. Discovery are among the most significant restructurings. The ongoing consolidation of media ownership has significant implications for performers, creators, and audiences in ways that continue to unfold.
