What does Equipment Maintenance mean?

Equipment Maintenance refers to the regular inspection, cleaning, servicing, and repair of production equipment — cameras, lenses, lighting fixtures, sound gear, grip equipment, and all other technical tools used on a film or television set. Equipment maintenance is a shared responsibility across all technical departments, with each department head responsible for the condition of their department’s inventory. Well-maintained equipment performs reliably on set, reducing the likelihood of costly technical failures during filming. Productions typically build equipment maintenance time into their schedules and budgets, particularly for long shoots.

Example:The camera department’s daily equipment maintenance routine included cleaning lenses, checking battery charges, inspecting cable connections, and verifying that all camera heads were properly calibrated — a thirty-minute process that prevented technical problems before they could disrupt the shooting day.
Example: When the lighting fixture failed mid-scene due to a loose connection that should have been caught during maintenance, the gaffer used the delay to establish a more rigorous daily equipment check — a lesson that the cost of maintenance time is always less than the cost of unexpected downtime.

Camera lenses — particularly the high-quality prime lenses used in professional film production — require specialized maintenance that most camera technicians are not qualified to perform. Professional lens servicing involves disassembling the lens in a clean environment, cleaning optical elements with specialized materials, lubricating mechanical components, and recalibrating focus and aperture accuracy. A single professional lens service can cost several hundred dollars, but a poorly maintained lens can introduce optical problems that are far more expensive to correct in post-production.
