What does Grip Truck mean?

Grip Truck is the production vehicle that carries all the grip department’s equipment — camera support gear, dollies, tracks, C-stands, flags, sandbags, diffusion frames, and related hardware — to each filming location. The grip truck is one of several specialty equipment vehicles that travel with a production, alongside the camera truck, the electric truck, the wardrobe truck, and others. On location shoots, the grip truck serves as a mobile warehouse from which the key grip and their team retrieve and return equipment throughout the shooting day.

Example:The key grip met the grip truck at the location early in the morning to supervise the load-out — directing the grip crew as they carried the day’s required equipment from the truck to the set before the camera and director arrived.
Example: When the director decided mid-day to add a dolly shot not originally planned for the location, the best boy grip checked the grip truck inventory and confirmed that the necessary track sections and dolly were available — preventing what could have been a significant scheduling delay.

Did you know?
The size and contents of a grip truck reflect the scale and complexity of the production it serves. A major studio feature film’s grip truck can be a full semi-trailer carrying tens of thousands of dollars worth of specialized equipment. A small independent production might operate from a cargo van with a fraction of that inventory. The grip truck’s contents are one of the clearest indicators of a production’s budget and ambition — experienced crew members can often size up a production’s scale within minutes of seeing what’s in the truck.
