What does Weather Permit Call mean?
Weather Permit Call is a contingency call time issued to cast and crew when a production’s exterior filming schedule is dependent on weather conditions. Rather than committing to a firm call time in advance, the production issues a weather permit call that allows the AD and production team to monitor conditions and decide — typically by a specified decision time in the early morning — whether to proceed with the planned outdoor shoot or pivot to a cover set or interior scenes. Cast and crew are asked to remain available and standby until the weather decision is made.
Example:The call sheet listed a weather permit call for the beach scene — cast were asked to be ready by 7 a.m. but told the production would make a go or no-go decision based on conditions by 5 a.m., with a text notification to follow.
Example: The child actor’s parents appreciated the weather permit call system because it gave them early warning to keep the morning flexible — in the past, a firm call time that got pushed due to weather had disrupted school arrangements unnecessarily.

Weather permit calls are most common in locations with highly variable weather — coastal areas, mountain environments, and cities with unpredictable seasons. Productions that regularly shoot outdoors often build buffer days into their schedule specifically to absorb weather delays, and experienced ADs develop relationships with specialized meteorological services that provide location-specific forecasts far more accurate than general weather apps.
