What does Digital Camera mean?

Digital Camera refers to any camera that captures images as digital data rather than on photographic film — the dominant format in professional film and television production since the early 2000s. Professional digital cinema cameras — including the ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, and Blackmagic Cinema Camera — record footage to digital media at high resolutions and bit depths, providing the quality required for theatrical exhibition and high-end television. Digital cameras have transformed production by dramatically reducing film costs, enabling immediate playback of footage, and expanding the range of shooting environments and techniques available to cinematographers.

Example:The director of photography chose the ARRI Alexa for the production — a digital cinema camera renowned for its natural color rendition and dynamic range, qualities that would allow the film to be shot in available light without the artificial look that inferior digital cameras can produce.
Example: The child actor’s first film set included a digital camera operator explaining how the footage could be reviewed immediately on the monitor — a dramatic difference from the film era, when the results of a day’s work could not be seen until the film was processed overnight.

Did you know?
The shift from photographic film to digital cameras in professional production happened remarkably quickly — within a decade of the first high-quality digital cinema cameras becoming available in the early 2000s, digital had become the dominant format for most professional productions. George Lucas’s decision to shoot Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones on the Sony HDW-F900 digital camera in 2002 was a watershed moment that signaled the industry’s direction, even though the format was initially controversial among cinematographers accustomed to the qualities of photographic film.
