What does Storage Media mean?
Storage Media refers to the digital recording media on which camera footage is captured and stored during production — including memory cards, CFast cards, SSDs, and other solid-state storage formats used by professional digital cinema cameras. Unlike the film era, where footage was captured on photographic negative, digital production captures footage to storage media that can be immediately downloaded, backed up, and prepared for post-production. The management of storage media — downloading, verifying, backing up, and reformatting cards for reuse — is a primary responsibility of the digital imaging technician (DIT) and the second assistant camera.
Example:At the end of each shooting day, the DIT downloaded all the camera’s storage media to multiple hard drives, verified the data integrity of each card before reformatting it for the next day’s filming — a critical data management process that ensured no footage would be lost.
Example: The production used high-speed CFast cards for the primary camera system — storage media capable of handling the enormous data rates generated by 6K RAW recording — and maintained a strict protocol of never reformatting a card until its footage had been verified on at least two separate backup drives.

The shift from photographic film to digital storage media fundamentally changed the economics and logistics of professional production. Film stock was expensive, limited in quantity, and could only be processed after the fact — encouraging careful, deliberate shooting. Digital storage media is comparatively cheap and reusable, which has enabled directors to shoot significantly more footage per production day. This abundance has had complex effects on performance — more coverage and more takes available means more creative options in the edit, but also more time on set executing material that may never appear in the finished film.
