What does Second Assistant Director mean?
Second Assistant Director is the first assistant director’s primary deputy, responsible for managing the cast — tracking their whereabouts, coordinating their movement between holding areas and the set, distributing sides and call sheets, obtaining signatures on release forms, and maintaining the daily production report. The 2nd AD serves as the communication link between the production office and the set, relaying information from the 1st AD to cast and crew and ensuring that performers are always where they need to be and prepared for their scenes. For child actors, the 2nd AD is often the crew member they and their parents have the most direct contact with throughout the day.
Example:The 2nd AD came to the holding area to let the child actor know she had thirty minutes before her scene, gave her and her parent the updated sides for the afternoon, and confirmed the studio teacher had been notified to release her from school time.
Example: Throughout the day, the 2nd AD maintained a running log of every cast member’s in time, meal breaks, and out time — documentation that would form the basis of the production’s daily report and ensure accurate payroll calculations for all performers.
Did you know?
The 2nd AD is the crew member who most directly affects the daily experience of actors on a production. A skilled 2nd AD who keeps cast informed, treats them with respect, and communicates clearly can make a filming day feel smooth and professional even when the schedule is under pressure. An inexperienced or disorganized 2nd AD creates confusion and stress that ripples through the entire cast. Many actors remember specific 2nd ADs — positively or negatively — from productions throughout their careers.
