What does Property Master mean?
Property Master is the crew member responsible for sourcing, managing, and maintaining all props used in a film or television production — every object an actor physically handles or interacts with during a scene. The property master works from the script and in close collaboration with the production designer to identify every prop requirement, then sources, purchases, rents, or creates the items needed. On set, the property master is responsible for the placement and continuity of all props between takes, ensuring that every object is in exactly the right position for each shot.
Example:The property master had laid out every prop for the scene precisely as they appeared in continuity photographs from the previous day’s filming — ensuring that if the editor needed to cut between shots, the child actor’s props would be in identical positions in every take.
Example: For the historical drama, the property master spent weeks sourcing period-appropriate objects — avoiding modern anachronisms that would be invisible to the crew on set but immediately noticeable to audiences watching the finished film.
Did you know?
Property masters have one of the most detail-oriented jobs on any production. On a complex film with hundreds of props across dozens of scenes, the potential for continuity errors is enormous. Many property masters develop extensive photo documentation systems — photographing every prop placement at the end of each setup — so that continuity can be precisely matched across shooting days, even when scenes that are adjacent in the film may have been shot weeks apart.
