Prompt Side

What does Prompt Side mean?

Prompt Side refers to the side of a theater stage where the prompter traditionally stands to assist performers who forget their lines — in the UK and much of the English-speaking theater world, this is stage left (the performer’s left as they face the audience). The opposite side is called the opposite prompt side (OP). The terms prompt side and opposite prompt side are standard directional references in British and Australian theater, used in stage management, lighting plots, and blocking notation. In American theater, stage left and stage right are more commonly used.

Example:The stage manager’s blocking notes specified that the actor should enter from prompt side for the scene’s opening — a direction that the British-trained director used habitually, which the American cast members had to translate to ‘enter from stage left.’
Example: The lighting designer’s plot labeled the fixtures according to prompt side and opposite prompt side conventions — standard terminology in the UK production the team had been trained on, requiring a brief orientation for the American crew members on their first international co-production.

Did you know?
The origin of ‘prompt side’ as a stage term dates to the era when a prompter with a copy of the script stood in a fixed position in the wings to whisper forgotten lines to performers during live performances. The role of the theatrical prompter was common in European theater through the early twentieth century, with prompters occupying a dedicated booth at the front of the stage apron in many traditional theater buildings. While the live prompter has largely disappeared from professional theater, the directional terminology they inspired persists in stage management and production design conventions.
