What does Stage Left/Right mean?

Stage Left and Stage Right are directional terms used in theater and film to describe the actor’s left and right as they face the audience. These directions help guide actors and crew during blocking, rehearsals, and performances. For example, moving “stage left” means moving to the left from the actor’s point of view, while “stage right” refers to moving right. This differs from house left and house right, which refer to the audience’s perspective. Using clear directional terms like these ensures smooth coordination during live performances or shoots.

Example:The director instructs the actor to exit stage right at the end of the scene, ensuring the transition aligns with the blocking.
Example: During rehearsal, the stage manager clarifies that the actor should move stage left to reach their next cue position.
