Light Cues

What does Light Cues mean?

Light Cues are the pre-programmed changes in stage or set lighting that occur at specific moments during a theatrical performance or television production — transitions between lighting states that create mood, indicate time of day, signal scene changes, or enhance dramatic moments. In theater, light cues are called by the stage manager and executed by the light board operator from a programmed sequence. Each cue specifies which lights change, by how much, and over what duration. A complex theatrical production may have hundreds of light cues across a performance.

Example:The stage manager called ‘Go, light cue 47’ at the precise moment the actor crossed to the window, and the lighting shifted from warm interior light to cool moonlight — a transition that had been programmed and rehearsed dozens of times to achieve exactly the right visual effect at exactly the right dramatic moment.
Example: The lighting designer reviewed the cue sheet with the child actor before her first technical rehearsal, explaining that the lighting would change at specific moments during her scenes and that she should not be distracted by the shifts — the cues were designed to support her performance, not interrupt it.

Did you know?
The precision of light cue timing in professional theater is extraordinary — cues are often programmed to fire within fractions of a second of a specific musical note, word of dialogue, or physical action. The stage manager’s ability to call cues at exactly the right moment while simultaneously tracking the performers’ positions, the music, and the production report is one of the most demanding multitasking skills in theater. Experienced stage managers describe calling a complex show’s cues as a form of real-time performance in itself.
