Light Board

What does Light Board mean?

Light Board is the electronic control console used by a lighting operator to program and execute all lighting cues in a theatrical or television production. Also called a lighting console or lighting desk, the light board allows the operator to create, store, and recall complex lighting states — controlling the intensity of every individual instrument in the rig simultaneously through programmed cues. Modern theatrical light boards can control hundreds of moving lights, LEDs, and conventional fixtures, enabling elaborate lighting designs that change fluidly throughout a performance.

Example:The lighting designer programmed the entire show’s cues into the light board during the technical rehearsal — creating a sequence of over two hundred distinct lighting states that the board operator would execute in real time during each performance.
Example: When the director decided to change the lighting transition in the final scene, the lighting designer sat at the light board to reprogram the cue — a process that took fifteen minutes and demonstrated the flexibility that digital control systems provide compared to manual dimmer operation.

Did you know?
The evolution of theatrical light boards from manual dimmer racks to sophisticated digital consoles happened remarkably quickly. In the 1960s, controlling a large theatrical lighting rig required multiple operators physically adjusting individual dimmer handles in coordination. By the 1980s, computerized control systems allowed a single operator to execute complex cues that would have required a team. Today’s consoles — from manufacturers like ETC, MA Lighting, and High End Systems — can control thousands of parameters simultaneously with a precision that manual operation could never achieve.
