Location Release

What does Location Release mean?

Location Release is a signed document from a property owner or manager that grants a film or television production the right to film at a specific location and to use the resulting footage in the production without further compensation or legal claim. Location releases are distinct from location agreements — while a location agreement is the comprehensive contract governing the entire relationship with a location, a location release is a simpler document, often used for brief filming at locations where a full agreement is impractical, such as brief exterior shots of buildings, storefronts, or public spaces from private property.

Example:The location manager obtained location releases from the three businesses whose storefronts appeared prominently in the exterior driving scene — simple one-page documents signed by each business owner confirming their permission for the footage to appear in the finished film.
Example: When the production needed a quick exterior shot of the apartment building, the location manager knocked on the superintendent’s door and obtained a signed location release on the spot — a much faster process than executing a full location agreement for what would be a single camera setup.

Did you know?
The distinction between what requires a full location agreement versus a simple location release is not always obvious and is often a judgment call made by the location manager and production’s legal team. Factors include how prominently the location appears in the finished film, whether the location is recognizable, whether any interior filming occurs, and the potential for the property owner to object to the context in which the location appears. Productions that fail to obtain proper location releases can face legal challenges when attempting to distribute their finished film.
