What does Location Agreement mean?
Location Agreement is a legal contract between a film or television production and a property owner — individual, business, or institution — that grants the production the right to use the property as a filming location for a specified period and under specified conditions. Location agreements define the permitted dates and hours of use, the areas of the property accessible to the production, compensation to the owner, insurance and liability provisions, restoration obligations, and any restrictions on what can be filmed or altered. A signed location agreement is required before any production activity can legally take place at a private property.
Example:The location manager negotiated a location agreement with the homeowner before any crew set foot on the property — confirming the three-day filming window, the daily location fee, the areas that would be used, and the production’s obligation to restore the property to its original condition after filming concluded.
Example: When the production wanted to film at the school, the location manager worked with the school district’s facilities department to execute a location agreement that addressed crew access hours, student safety protocols, areas off-limits to filming, and the district’s liability requirements.
