Development Deal

What does Development Deal mean?

Development Deal is a contract in which a studio, network, or streaming platform pays a writer, producer, director, or other creative to develop a project — typically from an early concept or existing intellectual property — into a form suitable for production consideration. Development deals fund the writing of scripts, the refinement of series bibles, and the attachment of key creative elements before a production decision is made. Most development projects are never produced — the development process exists specifically to evaluate and improve material before committing the much larger resources required for actual production.

Example:The production company signed a development deal with the writer to adapt the popular children’s book into a film script — providing a fee for the initial draft and a revision, with an option to purchase the completed screenplay if they chose to move forward with the project.
Example: The showrunner’s overall deal included a development deal for her new children’s series concept — the network would fund the writing of a pilot script and series bible, evaluate the material, and then decide whether to order a pilot production.

Did you know?
Development deals are sometimes described as the entertainment industry’s version of research and development investment — a necessary cost of discovering which projects have commercial and creative potential before committing production resources. The statistics are sobering: for every ten projects in active development, typically only one or two will be produced, and of those produced, only a fraction will achieve commercial success. Understanding this reality helps producers, writers, and performers maintain perspective about the significance of development deals as milestones rather than guarantees.
