If Come Deal

2 minute read | Last updated: 2 years ago

What does If Come Deal mean?

If Come Deal is an informal arrangement in which a performer agrees to be attached to a project and available if the project is greenlit — without any guaranteed payment unless and until the production moves forward. If come deals are common in film and television development, where projects may spend months or years in development before receiving a production commitment. The performer takes the risk that the project may never be made, accepting the potential upside of being attached to a desirable project in exchange for the uncertainty of unpaid development attachment.

Example:The agent explained the if come deal to the family — the streaming platform loved the child actor for the lead role and wanted to attach her to the project, but the series had not yet received an official greenlight, meaning no money would change hands unless and until the production was formally ordered.
Example: The entertainment attorney reviewed the if come deal terms carefully, confirming that the attachment was non-exclusive — the child actor remained free to audition for and accept other work during the development period, with her attachment to the first project contingent only on it moving forward.

Did you know?
If come deals are a practical mechanism for aligning creative interests during the inherently uncertain development phase of entertainment projects. Producers value if come attachments because they allow them to represent to financiers and networks that desirable talent is already interested in the project. Performers value them as an opportunity to position themselves for projects they believe in before formal commitment is possible. The key protection for performers is ensuring the if come attachment is non-exclusive, preserving the freedom to continue working while waiting for the development outcome.
