Financial Core (Fi-Core)

What does Financial Core (Fi-Core) mean?

Financial Core (Fi-Core) is a legal status available to members of SAG-AFTRA and other entertainment unions under the National Labor Relations Act that allows performers to resign full union membership while retaining the right to work on union productions — without being subject to union discipline for working on non-union productions. A performer who goes Fi-Core pays reduced union fees covering the union’s core representational costs but is not a full union member and loses the right to vote in union elections, hold union office, or use union credit unions and other member benefits. The Fi-Core option is controversial within the union community.

Example:The actor chose Fi-Core status after her agent explained that several significant non-union opportunities had arisen that she could not accept as a full SAG-AFTRA member — a decision that gave her flexibility but cost her full membership privileges and created tension with some union colleagues.
Example: The entertainment attorney advised the family to understand the long-term implications of Fi-Core status before their child actor pursued it — explaining that while it offered short-term flexibility, it could affect professional relationships and opportunities in ways that were difficult to reverse.

Did you know?
The Fi-Core option exists because of Supreme Court decisions establishing that workers cannot be compelled to be full union members as a condition of employment, but can be required to pay fees covering collective bargaining costs. In the entertainment industry, where the line between union and non-union work has significant career and financial implications, the Fi-Core option represents a significant and contentious middle ground that different performers evaluate very differently depending on their specific career situation.
