What does Tech Rehearsal mean?

Tech Rehearsal is a rehearsal in theatrical production during which the technical elements of a show — lighting, sound, set changes, special effects, and projections — are integrated with the performers’ work for the first time. Tech rehearsals are among the most demanding and time-consuming phases of theatrical production: they proceed slowly, stopping frequently to adjust technical elements, and require cast members to repeat sections of the show many times. The tech rehearsal process can last several days or even weeks for complex productions, and is the period during which the creative team transforms a series of rehearsed scenes into a complete theatrical experience.

Example:The child actor had been warned that tech rehearsal would be very different from the rehearsals she had been enjoying — long waits while lighting was adjusted, frequent stops mid-scene, and the challenge of maintaining her performance energy through what could be a ten-hour day of repeated stops and starts.
Example: The director reminded the cast before tech rehearsal began that the process would require patience — that each stop to fix a lighting cue or sound level was making the show better, and that their job was to perform consistently regardless of how many times they had to redo a scene.

Did you know?
Tech rehearsals are sometimes called ‘hell week’ in amateur and educational theater — reflecting the combination of technical complexity, long hours, accumulated fatigue, and heightened stakes that characterizes this phase of production. Even in professional theater, tech rehearsal is acknowledged as one of the most challenging periods for both cast and creative team. The technical director, stage manager, lighting designer, and sound designer must coordinate dozens of elements simultaneously while maintaining the patience and precision needed to build the show’s complete technical infrastructure.
