What does Grip Stand mean?

Grip Stand is a versatile, adjustable metal stand used by the grip department to position and support flags, nets, diffusion frames, reflectors, small lighting instruments, and other equipment on a film or television set. Grip stands — also called C-stands or century stands — have a telescoping center column, a rotating arm, and a knuckle joint that allows the attached equipment to be positioned at virtually any angle. They are among the most frequently used pieces of grip equipment on any set, providing the foundational support infrastructure for lighting control and camera accessories.

Example:The grip positioned a C-stand with a flag on the actor’s left side to cut the light spilling onto the background — a precise placement that the gaffer had requested to create separation between the subject and the set behind her.
Example: When the child actor’s mark put her directly under a harsh overhead light, the grip quickly positioned a grip stand with a diffusion frame overhead to soften the light quality before the director of photography approved the setup.

Did you know?
The ‘C’ in C-stand is believed to stand for ‘century’ — reflecting the stand’s original design for use with century lights, a specific type of studio light common in the early days of Hollywood. Over time, C-stands became standard equipment across all grip and lighting applications, and the name has stuck even though the century lights for which they were originally designed are no longer in common use. Today C-stands are so ubiquitous that they are practically synonymous with film set infrastructure.
