Second Hold

What does Second Hold mean?

Second Hold is a casting status in which a production has provisionally reserved an actor as their backup choice for a specific role or date — behind the performer on first hold. If the first-hold performer becomes unavailable or the production decides to go in a different direction, the second-hold performer moves to first hold and becomes the primary candidate. A second hold represents genuine interest and means the performer is a strong contender, but it carries less certainty than a first hold. Actors on second hold are still expected to notify the production before accepting conflicting work.

Example:The agent told the child actor she was on a second hold for the commercial — not the top choice, but a solid backup position that might convert if the first-hold performer was not available for the confirmed shoot date.
Example: When the first-hold performer booked a conflicting project, the production moved the child actor from second hold to first hold and made a formal offer within 24 hours — a reminder to her agent that even second holds can quickly become bookings.

The hold hierarchy — first, second, sometimes third — is an informal but widely used system in commercial and television casting. Some productions maintain holds on multiple performers for the same role simultaneously as a scheduling risk management strategy, particularly for productions with a single confirmed shoot date where any performer unavailability would require the entire casting process to restart. Understanding where you sit in the hold hierarchy helps performers and their agents make informed decisions about how to manage competing booking opportunities.
