First Hold

What does First Hold mean?

First Hold is a casting status in which a production has provisionally reserved an actor for a specific project or date without yet making a formal offer. A first hold signals strong interest and means the production wants to keep the actor available while final casting decisions are being made. The actor is generally expected to notify the production before accepting conflicting work, giving them the opportunity to confirm or release the hold. A first hold does not guarantee a booking — it is an informal reservation that can be released if the production decides to go in a different direction.

Example:The casting director placed the child actor on a first hold for the commercial shoot — a positive signal that she was the top choice, but not yet a confirmed booking that her agent could represent as a firm commitment.
Example: When a competing booking opportunity came in for the same dates as the first hold, the agent contacted the production to check the status — the production confirmed within 24 hours, converting the first hold to a firm offer and allowing the family to make a definitive decision.

Did you know?
The hold system — first hold, second hold, and sometimes third hold — exists because productions frequently have multiple performers they are considering for the same role simultaneously. Being on a first hold means you are the production’s top choice, a second hold means you are the backup, and so on. Understanding where your hold sits in the hierarchy is useful information that experienced agents track carefully on behalf of their clients.
