Must Join

What does Must Join mean?

Must Join refers to the point at which a performer who has previously worked on a non-union production under a SAG-AFTRA Taft-Hartley waiver must join SAG-AFTRA before working on any further union productions. Under the Taft-Hartley Act, a performer can work on a union production once as a non-union performer — but if they are hired again for union work, they are obligated to join the union. The ‘must join’ status signals that the performer has exhausted their Taft-Hartley eligibility and union membership is now required as a condition of continued union employment.

Example:The child actor had used her Taft-Hartley waiver on a union commercial the previous year, which meant that when she booked her second union production, she was ‘must join’ — her agent explained that SAG-AFTRA membership was now required before filming could begin.
Example: The production’s SAG-AFTRA compliance officer flagged the child actor as must join status before she was cleared to start filming — a process that required the family to complete the union membership application and pay the initiation fee before her first day on set.

Did you know?
SAG-AFTRA initiation fees vary by zone and can represent a significant investment for families of child performers. As of the most recent rate schedule, the national initiation fee is several hundred dollars, with additional semi-annual dues. For child actors who are just beginning to book union work, the decision about when to join — and whether to delay joining by carefully managing Taft-Hartley eligibility — is one of the more strategically complex decisions a family faces early in a child’s career.
