What does Identification Slate mean?
Identification Slate is a type of audition slate in which the performer holds up a written or printed board displaying their name, the role they are auditioning for, or other identifying information — rather than simply stating this information verbally. The identification slate is increasingly common in self-tape auditions where casting directors receive very high volumes of submissions and want a quick visual reference for each performer. The board can be handwritten on a piece of paper, printed from a template, or written on a small whiteboard held at chest level while the performer looks into the camera.
Example:The self-tape instructions specified an identification slate — the child actor’s parent printed a simple card with her name, age, and the role title, which she held up clearly to camera for three seconds before beginning her slate introduction.
Example: The casting director for the streaming series requested identification slates specifically because she was reviewing over three hundred submissions — having the performer’s name visible on screen from the very first frame made organization and review significantly faster.
