Profile Slate

What does Profile Slate mean?

Profile Slate is a type of audition slate in which the performer turns slowly to show their left and right profiles — the side views of their face and sometimes their full physique — to the camera. Profile slates are most common in commercial auditions where the casting team needs to evaluate the performer’s physical appearance from multiple angles, and in any audition where the production has specific physical requirements that a straight-on headshot does not adequately convey. The profile turn is often included as part of a full slate rather than as a standalone request.

Example:The self-tape instructions for the commercial included a profile slate — after introducing herself facing forward, the child actor slowly turned to show her left profile, faced forward again briefly, then turned to show her right profile before the camera.
Example: The casting director requested profile slates specifically because the role required the child to be matched with a sibling character already cast — she needed to assess whether the facial structure and physical type of the new performer would read convincingly as related to the performer already in the production.

Did you know?
Profile slates are taken far more seriously by commercial casting directors than by theatrical casting teams. In commercial production, where an actor’s physical appearance is part of the brand message, the profile view can reveal proportions and features that affect how the performer photographs and films in the specific product context. The same performer might be perfect for one commercial’s visual brief and entirely wrong for another’s — and the profile slate is one of the tools that helps casting directors make these subtle visual assessments quickly.
