Booking Conflict

What does Booking Conflict mean?

Booking Conflict occurs when an actor has an existing commitment to one production that overlaps with — and prevents them from accepting — a new booking opportunity. Booking conflicts are one of the most common and consequential scheduling challenges in an actor’s career, requiring careful management by the actor, their agent, and the productions involved. For child actors, booking conflicts can arise from school schedules, other productions, or personal commitments that fall within the dates a production needs the performer. Agents track their clients’ availability meticulously to minimize conflicts and maximize booking opportunities.

Example:The child actor was offered a three-day commercial shoot, but her agent discovered a booking conflict — the dates overlapped with the final days of her existing TV episode commitment, making it impossible to accept both without renegotiating one of the schedules.
Example: When the production offered the recurring role, the agent immediately checked for booking conflicts across all existing commitments and flagged a potential overlap with a previously booked appearance, which she resolved by negotiating a schedule adjustment with the second production.

Did you know?
Booking conflicts are particularly complex in television when a performer is under a holding deal or option — the production company may have the right to call the actor back for additional episodes on relatively short notice, making it difficult for the actor to commit to other work without risking a conflict. Managing these overlapping obligations is one of the most practical and important functions a talent agent performs for their clients.
