Rush Call

What does Rush Call mean?

Rush Call is a last-minute request for an actor, crew member, or service to report to set or be available for work with very little advance notice — typically less than 24 hours and sometimes just a few hours. Rush calls occur when a production needs to fill an unexpected vacancy, respond to a schedule change, or bring in additional performers quickly. Under SAG-AFTRA agreements, rush calls may trigger additional compensation premiums. For child actors and their parents, rush calls require particular flexibility in scheduling and compliance with the minor’s permitted working hours.

Example:The casting director called the child actor’s agent at 7 a.m. with a rush call — one of the scheduled performers had fallen ill and they needed a replacement on set by 10 a.m. The family had two hours to decide and get to the studio.
Example: The production coordinator issued rush calls to three background actors when the crowd scene turned out to require more performers than originally planned, offering a premium rate to compensate for the short notice.

Did you know?
Rush calls are one of the realities of professional production that first-time parents find most challenging to navigate. The entertainment industry operates on a culture of immediate availability — experienced performers and their representatives understand that responding quickly to rush calls builds relationships with casting directors and production teams. However, for families managing school schedules and other commitments, last-minute rush calls require having contingency plans in place before the production begins.
