Dance Captain

What does Dance Captain mean?

Dance Captain is a performer in a musical theater production who is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the choreography throughout the run of the show. The dance captain learns every ensemble dance track in the production, monitors performers’ technique and execution during rehearsals and performances, calls and runs dance maintenance rehearsals when needed, and teaches choreography to new cast members joining the production. The dance captain works under the choreographer and reports to the production stage manager. The role is distinct from the swing, who covers multiple performance tracks.

Example:The dance captain called a thirty-minute cleanup rehearsal before the Saturday matinee after noticing that two numbers had become sloppy over the course of the week — her attention to detail kept the production looking as sharp as opening night.
Example: When a young performer was cast as an understudy mid-run, the dance captain took responsibility for teaching her all the choreography she would need to cover the role, working with her during off-hours until she was performance-ready.

Did you know?
The dance captain role carries significant responsibility but is rarely credited prominently — audiences see the results of the dance captain’s work in every performance without knowing who is responsible for keeping the choreography alive. In long-running Broadway productions, the dance captain may maintain a show’s choreography for years after the original choreographer has moved on to other projects, becoming the primary custodian of the work.
