Understudy refers to an actor who learns the lines and blocking for a specific role in a theater production and is prepared to step in if the primary actor is unable to perform. Understudies are essential in live theater, ensuring that performances can continue even if a lead actor becomes sick or injured. Understudies may also perform in ensemble roles when not needed as a replacement.
