What does Electronic Press Kit (EPK) mean?

Electronic Press Kit (EPK) is a digital package of promotional materials assembled by a production company, studio, or publicist to support the marketing of a film, television show, or other media project. An EPK typically includes a synopsis, high-resolution production stills, cast and crew biographies, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with key talent, and a trailer or clip reel. EPKs are distributed to media outlets, journalists, and broadcasters to facilitate press coverage and publicity.

Example:When the independent film was accepted into a festival, the publicist assembled an EPK with the director’s bio, production stills, and a three-minute interview clip to send to entertainment journalists covering the event.
Example: A parent whose child had a featured role in a studio film received a copy of the EPK from the production — which included professional photos from the shoot that could be used for the child’s portfolio.

Did you know?
Before the internet, press kits were physical packages mailed to journalists and broadcasters — sometimes containing VHS tapes, printed photos, and bound bios. The shift to digital EPKs in the early 2000s dramatically reduced the cost of film publicity and allowed independent productions to compete more effectively with studio marketing budgets.
