What does Public Relations (PR) mean?

Public Relations (PR) is the strategic practice of managing how a person, organization, or production is perceived by the public, media, and industry. In the entertainment industry, PR professionals — known as publicists — work to generate positive media coverage, manage reputations, handle crisis communications, and build public profiles for actors, directors, studios, and films. For performers, PR support typically becomes relevant at the point when they have achieved enough visibility to benefit from proactive media management.

Example:After a child actor’s breakout performance in a major studio film, the family worked with a publicist to carefully manage her growing public profile — approving interview requests, overseeing her social media presence, and establishing a consistent public narrative.
Example: The production company hired a PR firm to manage press for the film’s festival run, coordinating interviews, arranging screenings for journalists, and pitching stories to entertainment media ahead of the theatrical release.

Edward Bernays, often called the ‘father of public relations,’ was a nephew of Sigmund Freud and applied psychological principles to shape public opinion at scale. One of his most famous early campaigns in the 1920s convinced American women that smoking cigarettes was a symbol of liberation — dramatically expanding the tobacco market. His techniques laid the groundwork for the entire modern PR industry.
