Summer Stock

What does Summer Stock mean?

Summer Stock refers to theatrical productions performed during the summer months at theaters — often in resort areas or smaller cities — that traditionally operated on a rapid-production repertory model. Classic summer stock companies rehearsed a new show each week while performing the previous week’s production, creating a high-intensity environment that developed performers rapidly. While the traditional weekly repertory model has largely been replaced by longer rehearsal periods, summer stock has evolved to describe professional summer theatrical seasons at established regional theaters and outdoor venues that provide employment for performers between the fall and spring theater seasons.

Example:The young actor spent two summers working in summer stock at a Berkshires theater, performing in four productions across the season — the intense experience accelerating her professional development more than a year of conventional training could have achieved.
Example: The summer stock audition was open to performers of all experience levels, with younger performers often cast alongside veterans — an environment that many actors cite as one of the most educational of their early career, learning by doing alongside experienced professionals.

Did you know?
The term ‘summer stock’ has its origins in the theater world’s equivalent of a stock company — a permanent repertory ensemble that maintained a rotating inventory of productions ready to perform. The summer timing reflected the traditional theatrical calendar, in which Broadway and major city theaters went dark during the summer months, freeing professional performers to work in resort areas where vacationing audiences provided a reliable market. The model produced extraordinary performers across several generations of American theater.
