What does Association of Talent Agents (ATA) mean?
Association of Talent Agents (ATA) is a trade association that represents licensed talent agencies in the United States. The ATA negotiates franchise agreements with unions such as SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity Association on behalf of its member agencies, establishing the rules under which agents can represent union actors. Most major talent agencies are ATA members, and their membership signals that they operate within established industry standards and are authorized to represent union performers.
Example:When researching talent agencies for her daughter, the parent checked whether each agency was an ATA member — a key indicator that the agency operates under legitimate industry agreements rather than as an unlicensed operation.
Example: The agent explained that because her agency was an ATA signatory, she was bound by SAG-AFTRA franchise rules — including the 10% commission cap — when representing union actors.
Did you know?
The ATA has been negotiating with SAG-AFTRA since the 1970s. The relationship between the two organizations has not always been smooth — in 2019, SAG-AFTRA ended its franchise agreement with ATA agencies over disputes about packaging fees, a dispute that was not fully resolved until 2022.
