Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)

What does Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) mean?

Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade organization that represents the major record labels and music distributors in the United States. The RIAA advocates for the music industry on legislative and policy issues, administers the Gold and Platinum certification program for music sales, and actively enforces copyright on behalf of its member companies. For actors who are also musicians or who have music tied to their work — through original soundtracks, theme songs, or music video roles — understanding the RIAA’s role in music rights is relevant to how royalties are calculated and enforced.

Example:When the soundtrack album from a popular TV show was certified Gold by the RIAA, it confirmed that over 500,000 copies had been sold — triggering additional royalty payments for the recording artists and session musicians featured on the album.
Example: A parent whose child sang the theme song for an animated series consulted an entertainment attorney to understand how RIAA certification and ongoing music royalties would work if the song became commercially successful.

The RIAA’s Gold certification was introduced in 1958 and originally required 1 million units sold. As album sales declined with the rise of digital music and streaming, the RIAA updated its certification standards to include streaming equivalents — 150 streams counting as one album unit — which has allowed more albums to achieve Gold and Platinum status than ever before.
