What does Rider mean?

Rider is an addendum to a standard contract specifying additional requirements, conditions, or provisions that a performer or other contracted party requires as a condition of their engagement. Riders can cover a wide range of requirements including dressing room specifications, travel and accommodation standards, dietary requirements, approved photographer lists, promotional obligations, and specific working conditions. Riders for established performers can be extraordinarily detailed, while riders for emerging performers typically address more basic practical requirements.

Example:The child actor’s rider included practical requirements for her working conditions — a designated quiet study space for school hours, a refrigerator stocked with specific snacks, and a parent-friendly waiting area near the set — provisions her agent had negotiated to ensure a comfortable and productive working environment.
Example: The entertainment attorney reviewed the production’s standard rider requirements before allowing her client to sign — confirming that the promotional obligations in the rider were reasonable and that the travel and accommodation provisions met the standards appropriate for the performer’s level of engagement.

Did you know?
Performers’ riders have become legendary in popular culture — particularly the rider requirement allegedly made by Van Halen that a bowl of M&Ms be provided backstage with all the brown ones removed. What seemed like rock star excess was actually a practical quality control device: the band’s technical rider for their elaborate stage show was so detailed that if they found brown M&Ms, it signaled that the venue had not read the rider carefully, prompting them to check all the technical requirements more carefully. The story became a business school case study in using a trivial test to verify that complex requirements have been met.
