What does Triple Threat mean?

Triple Threat is an entertainment industry term for a performer who is skilled in three of the foundational disciplines of musical theater — acting, singing, and dancing. A true triple threat can perform at a professional level in all three areas, making them among the most versatile and employable performers in the musical theater world. The triple threat designation has expanded in recent years to include screen acting alongside the traditional theater disciplines, and some use it more broadly to describe any performer with an unusually wide range of complementary skills. For child actors with aspirations in musical theater, developing all three skills from an early age is a significant competitive advantage.

Example:The casting breakdown for the touring production specified triple threat performers only — the production’s ensemble would need to sing, dance, and act with equal facility, and any performer who excelled in only one or two areas would not be considered regardless of how strong those skills were.
Example: The child actor’s training schedule reflected her goal of becoming a triple threat — acting classes on Tuesdays, voice lessons on Thursdays, and dance training on weekends, building the foundation across all three disciplines that musical theater careers require.

Did you know?
The triple threat ideal reflects the historical development of the American musical, which evolved from the early twentieth century as a form that required performers to be versatile across all three disciplines simultaneously. Early Broadway stars like Ethel Merman were celebrated primarily for their vocal power; later stars like Gwen Verdon raised the standard for dance; and the contemporary musical theater performer is expected to integrate all three at a high level. The rising bar has made triple threat training increasingly intensive and specialized for young performers with musical theater ambitions.
