What does Exploitation Film mean?

Exploitation Film refers to a low-budget film produced to capitalize on a current trend, controversial subject matter, or sensational content — typically featuring explicit violence, sexuality, or other taboo elements designed to attract audiences through shock value or titillation rather than artistic merit. The exploitation film tradition flourished in the 1950s through 1970s, producing genre cycles including women-in-prison films, blaxploitation films, and teen exploitation films. While the term is often pejorative, many exploitation films have been reassessed as significant cultural artifacts and some have achieved genuine cult status.

Example:The film studies class examined exploitation films of the 1970s as cultural documents — arguing that despite their sensationalist content, they addressed race, gender, and class issues that mainstream Hollywood was ignoring, making them inadvertently significant social texts.
Example: The young filmmaker cited exploitation cinema as a direct influence on her debut feature — explaining that the genre’s willingness to address taboo subjects directly, regardless of commercial respectability, was what had drawn her to filmmaking in the first place.

The blaxploitation subgenre of the early 1970s — including films like Shaft, Super Fly, and Coffy — has undergone significant critical reappraisal. Originally dismissed as lowbrow exploitation, these films are now recognized for featuring Black protagonists in roles of agency and power at a time when mainstream Hollywood rarely offered such representation. Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown (1997) was an explicit homage to blaxploitation star Pam Grier, helping introduce a new generation to the genre.
