What does Red Band Trailer mean?

Red Band Trailer is a film trailer preceded by a red title card indicating that the content is restricted to audiences 18 and older — as opposed to the standard green band trailer approved for all audiences. Red band trailers may contain explicit language, graphic violence, nudity, or other mature content. They are typically distributed through age-restricted channels and are not shown in theaters before G, PG, or PG-13 films.

Example:The marketing team created both a green band trailer suitable for all theatrical presentations and a red band trailer for age-restricted online distribution — the green band focusing on adventure and humor, the red band including violence and language that more accurately characterized the adult content.
Example: The child actor’s parent researched the film before her daughter auditioned by watching the green band trailer — deliberately choosing not to watch the red band version, whose content would have confirmed the film was not appropriate for a child performer.

Before online distribution, all trailers had to pass the same MPAA advertising standards regardless of the films they were promoting. The ability to create different versions for different distribution contexts has given marketing teams more freedom to accurately represent their films to appropriate audiences, while also raising questions about the effectiveness of age restrictions in practice.
