What does Broadcast Network mean?

Broadcast Network refers to a television network that transmits programming over the public airwaves — free to anyone with an antenna — in addition to distribution through cable and satellite systems. The major US broadcast networks are ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and The CW. Broadcast networks are subject to FCC regulations governing content standards and are required to serve the public interest. They generate revenue exclusively through advertising. Broadcast network television historically offered the largest audiences and the highest production values in the industry, and a series regular role on a broadcast network drama or comedy remains one of the most prestigious and financially significant achievements in a television actor’s career.

Example:The child actor’s guest star appearance on a broadcast network procedural was watched by eleven million viewers — an audience scale that no streaming platform would publicly confirm but that represented enormous exposure for her career.
Example: The agent explained that the broadcast network offer came with SAG-AFTRA network rates — significantly higher than the basic cable or streaming rates the family had seen on previous bookings — reflecting the premium that major network employment commands.

Did you know?
The dominance of broadcast networks in American television has declined substantially since the rise of cable and streaming, but they remain culturally significant in ways that streaming has not yet fully replicated. A broadcast network series finale or live event can still generate shared national viewing experiences that streaming’s fragmented, on-demand model cannot produce. The Super Bowl, the Academy Awards, and major sporting events continue to demonstrate that broadcast television’s ability to deliver simultaneous mass audiences remains unique and commercially valuable.
