Rehearsal Dates

What does Rehearsal Dates mean?

Rehearsal Dates refers to the scheduled days prior to principal photography during which cast members work with the director — and sometimes other creative department heads — to develop their performances, establish blocking, and prepare the material before cameras roll. Rehearsal dates are more common in theater than in film, where many productions go directly from table reads and costume fittings into filming. When rehearsals are scheduled for film or television, they are typically for complex scenes, ensemble work, or productions where the director values the opportunity to develop performances before the pressure and cost of a shooting day begins.

Example:The director scheduled three days of rehearsal before principal photography began — focusing specifically on the scenes involving the full child cast, whose ensemble chemistry was central to the film’s emotional success and could not be adequately developed during the time pressure of a shooting day.
Example: The child actor’s contract specified the rehearsal dates separately from the shooting dates — two days of preparation that would not count against her permitted daily work hours as actual production days but would still require the presence of a studio teacher and adherence to child labor law protections.

The debate about whether to rehearse before filming is one of the oldest and most persistent in film directing. Directors who favor rehearsal — including Sidney Lumet, who famously rehearsed for two weeks before filming — argue that it frees the shooting day for technical efficiency and allows performers to make braver choices when cameras roll. Directors who avoid rehearsal — including Robert Altman and many documentary-influenced filmmakers — argue that camera spontaneity captures something genuine that rehearsal destroys. Both positions have produced masterworks, suggesting the choice is less about right and wrong and more about the director’s specific creative priorities.
