Ultra Low Budget

What does Ultra Low Budget mean?

Ultra Low Budget is the lowest tier of SAG-AFTRA theatrical feature film agreements — available for productions with total budgets at or below approximately $250,000. The ultra low budget agreement allows qualifying independent productions to hire SAG-AFTRA performers at the lowest union minimums, enabling union production at a scale that would be impossible under standard SAG-AFTRA rates. Films qualifying for ultra low budget agreements must be non-studio productions and are typically limited in their distribution scope. The specific budget threshold and rate structures are periodically updated through negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the independent film community.

Example:The first-time filmmaker’s debut feature qualified for the SAG-AFTRA ultra low budget agreement, allowing her to cast experienced union performers at reduced rates that her $180,000 production budget could actually support without compromising the quality of the cast.
Example: The agent explained to the client that the ultra low budget rate on the indie film was a significant reduction from her usual fee, but that the combination of the script’s quality, the director’s reputation, and the festival circuit potential made it a worthwhile investment in her artistic career.

Some of American cinema’s most celebrated debut features were made under ultra low budget or modified low budget SAG-AFTRA agreements — productions where financial constraints forced creative solutions that ultimately became the films’ distinguishing qualities. The indie film movement of the late 1980s and 1990s was built substantially on the accessibility that tiered union agreements provided, enabling directors like Richard Linklater, Kevin Smith, and Darren Aronofsky to make their first films with professional union casts at budgets that would have been impossible under standard rates.
