What does Story Editor mean?

Story Editor is a senior-level position in a television writers’ room, typically occupied by an experienced writer who serves as a creative supervisor for less experienced staff writers. The story editor provides detailed notes and feedback on scripts, helps develop story arcs across episodes, mentors junior writers, and works closely with the showrunner to maintain the creative consistency of the series. In some productions, the story editor also writes and revises scripts directly. The title sits in the writers’ room hierarchy above staff writer and below executive story editor and co-producer.

Example:The story editor reviewed the staff writer’s first draft and provided detailed notes — flagging character inconsistencies, tightening the act break, and suggesting a restructuring of the B-story that would better serve the episode’s emotional arc.
Example: When the child actor’s recurring character was being developed for a larger arc in Season 2, the showrunner assigned the story editor to work directly with the writing staff on the character’s journey — ensuring continuity with the performance choices established in Season 1.

The television writers’ room hierarchy — from staff writer through story editor, executive story editor, co-producer, producer, co-executive producer, and executive producer — is one of the most structured and formalized career ladders in the entertainment industry. Each title carries specific credit, compensation, and responsibility levels negotiated between the WGA and studios. Writers advance through these levels based on experience, the number of episodes produced, and the number of seasons they have worked on a series.
