Manager Commission

What does Manager Commission mean?

Manager Commission refers to the percentage of a performer’s gross earnings paid to their talent manager as compensation for management services. In the entertainment industry, talent managers typically charge between fifteen and twenty percent of their client’s gross income — higher than the ten percent standard for licensed talent agents. Manager commission applies to earnings from all sources the manager has been involved in developing, including acting work, endorsements, appearances, and other commercial activities. Unlike agent commissions, which are regulated by state law and union franchise agreements, manager commissions are generally unregulated and negotiated individually.

Example:The child actor’s manager charged an eighteen percent commission on all bookings — meaning that of her $3,000 commercial booking, $540 went to the manager, $300 went to the agent, and the remaining $2,160 flowed to the family before taxes.
Example: When reviewing the management agreement, the entertainment attorney pointed out that the fifteen percent commission clause applied to all income streams — not just the bookings the manager had directly secured — and advised negotiating a narrower definition before signing.

Did you know?
The combined commission of an agent (10%) and manager (15-20%) means that performers with both types of representation may pay 25-30% of their gross earnings in representation fees before any other deductions. For child performers with modest earnings, this combined commission — added to business manager fees and taxes — can leave families with less than half of the headline booking fee. Understanding the full cost of representation is essential financial literacy for any family entering the industry.
