Night for Day

What does Night for Day mean?

Night for Day is a filmmaking technique in which scenes meant to take place during the day are filmed at night, typically using artificial lighting to simulate natural daylight. Night for day is the inverse of the day for night technique and is used when a production needs to control the lighting environment precisely — eliminating the unpredictability of natural sunlight — or when the filming location is only available at night. It requires powerful artificial lighting to approximate the quality and intensity of daylight.

Example:The production filmed the outdoor market scenes at night using powerful HMI lights to simulate bright afternoon sunlight, giving the cinematographer complete control over the lighting that would have been impossible during actual daytime shooting in the busy location.
Example: Because the studio backlot was only available between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the crew used the night for day technique throughout the production, carefully positioning large light sources outside the frame to replicate the look of natural morning light.

Did you know?
Night for day shooting is significantly more expensive than day for night because it requires substantial artificial lighting equipment to match the intensity of natural sunlight. A single HMI fixture powerful enough to simulate direct sunlight can cost several thousand dollars per day to rent. For this reason, night for day is typically reserved for situations where no other option is available rather than as a first choice.
