Talent Managers Association (TMA)

What does Talent Managers Association (TMA) mean?

Talent Managers Association (TMA) is a professional trade organization representing talent managers in the entertainment industry. The TMA advocates for the talent management profession, provides education and resources for its members, and works to establish professional standards for managers who represent actors, musicians, directors, and other creative talent. Unlike talent agents, talent managers are not required to be licensed in most US states, and the TMA serves as a voluntary professional body that signals a manager’s commitment to ethical practice.

Example:A parent vetting potential managers for her child actor checked whether each candidate was a TMA member — using it as one indicator of professional standing alongside references from other clients and a review of their client roster.
Example: The talent manager explained to the family that while she was not required by law to hold a license, her TMA membership meant she adhered to the association’s code of ethics and professional standards for handling client relationships.

The distinction between agents and managers is a perennial source of confusion in the entertainment industry. In California, only licensed agents are legally permitted to ‘procure employment’ — meaning actively soliciting and negotiating job offers. Managers who cross this line risk having their contracts voided under the Talent Agencies Act, a legal gray area that has resulted in numerous high-profile disputes between managers and their clients.
