What does Spec Script mean?

Spec Script refers to a speculative screenplay written by a screenwriter without a contract or guarantee that it will be purchased or produced. Spec scripts are usually created to showcase the writer’s skills and are often submitted to producers, agents, or contests in hopes of securing representation or a production deal. Unlike commissioned scripts, which are written based on an assignment, a spec script is written on the writer’s initiative. Spec scripts are common in both TV and film and can serve as a valuable calling card for aspiring screenwriters. Terms like Pitch Script and Pilot Script are related, depending on whether the project is a TV show or a film.

Example:A screenwriter submits their spec script to a production company, hoping to get it optioned for development into a feature film.
Example: An aspiring TV writer uses a spec script of an existing show to showcase their ability to write in a specific style, submitting it to agents for representation.
